As part of a mega-project in Costa Rica, with over $600 million allocated to the environmental improvement of San José, aimed at collecting and treating wastewater from more than one million people across 11 cantons, Prodac contributed one of its most innovative solutions: PVC-coated gabions.
Gabions are structural modules made from steel wire mesh with double-twisted hexagonal openings. They are filled on-site with stones from the project area, creating a flexible, permeable, and monolithic structure. These systems are not only durable and resistant but also environmentally friendly. Due to their design, vegetation can grow around or even inside them. Prodac also maintains a strong commitment to ecosystem care, operating the first 100% lead-free production plant—eliminating a highly toxic metal that can affect the entire chain. This makes Prodac gabions a versatile solution adaptable for retaining walls, slope stabilization, riverbank protection, dam and canal lining, longitudinal and transversal dikes, and even landscaping projects, all without exposing workers or end-users to harmful materials.
In partnership with one of our commercial allies in Costa Rica and Central America, we brought this solution to the outskirts of San José, Costa Rica’s capital. This is part of the international tender for the “Construction and Improvement of Collectors and Sub-Collectors,” composed of two contracts that will install or rehabilitate a total of 31 kilometers of sanitary pipelines in the areas of San José, Goicoechea, Montes de Oca, Vázquez de Coronado, Moravia, Desamparados, Alajuelita, and Tibás. The pipeline installation project is located in an area with abundant vegetation and frequent rainfall, which could pose significant risks without the use of gabions. More than 100 tons have already been installed as retaining walls to ensure the project’s success, benefiting over one million people, plus nearby families whose daily activities will remain unaffected. Because the site is highly exposed to corrosion agents,
